Alberta Henry 1920 - 2005
Alberta Henry is a Civil Rights activist and hero to marginalized communities throughout the state of Utah. From 1980 to 1992, Henry served as President of the Salt Lake City chapter of the NAACP.
Henry’s legacy lives on in Utah. Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) grants a scholarship named for the Civil Rights icon who fought for equity and sought to bring racial diversity to Utah. SLCC describes the award as follows: “The Alberta Henry Endowed Scholarship at SLCC was established in 2017 by the Alberta Henry Education Foundation, in memory of Ms. Alberta Henry, who was an influential civil rights advocate in the Salt Lake community for more than 40 years. The Alberta Henry Endowed Scholarship is for Black / African American students at Salt Lake Community College who are dedicated to serving others through community service, which was one of Ms. Henry’s guiding principles in life.”
She founded the Alberta Henry Education Foundation. The central aim of Henry’s education foundation was to provide academic support for youth in the community. One way the foundation achieved this objective was by providing college scholarships to underprivileged students.
Henry’s work in education spanned different age groups. She worked as a teacher’s aide in a Salt Lake City Head Start center, but she also consulted with the local public school district.
